Valentine's Salt Dough Ornaments!

Salt dough ornaments are a very favourite thing of mine to make with the kids!

I have started to make them to sell at Unique Treasures, but thought I would share them on here as well, so you can make them with your family, or even on your own!

What you need:
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup of table salt
  • 1/2 cup of cold water
  • Stuff to decorate with (paints, glitter, sharpie markers)
  • Ribbon (to hang them with)
  • Cookie cutters (optional, but they work well)
  • Drinking straws (to cut the holes with)

Step One:

Mix your flour and salt in a medium sized mixing bowl and stir well

Step Two:

Pour your water in slowly, you don't want your dough to be sticky, so you might not need to use all of the water. You will be able to tell as you stir it how much water you need.

Step Three:

Stir with a metal fork until it clumps together in the bowl, then it's time to get messy and use your hands to need the dough together. ( If the dough is to stiff add a little more water)

Step Four:

Roll your dough out on the table usually 1/2" to 1" works well for baking.

Step Five:

Use your cookie cutters to cut your shapes out. You can also use things around the house. For the ornaments I made I used a glass to cut the larger circles. For the smaller circles I used a water bottle lid.

Step six:
Put your ornaments on a baking sheet and put them in the oven on 300F and bake them for approx 45 mins. You will need to watch them they don't burn. You really don't even want them to go golden, they just need to dry!

Step Seven:

Take them out of the oven and let them sit until completely cooled. I find about an hour is good.

Step Eight:

Get out your decorating tools and have fun! When I am doing it with all the kids I give them sharpie makers and let them go at it! Don't forget to thread some ribbon through the holes so you can hang them!

I hope you have fun trying this out. This is a great anytime craft. It's easy and doesn't cost a lot of money!

                                                              My finished product!
